There are many different variants of poker and the game can be a complex mix of chance and skill. Players must consider the probabilities of their opponents having specific cards in their hands and on the table, as well as the likelihood that particular cards will be revealed. They must then decide whether to fold, call or raise bets based on this information. They can also choose to bluff for strategic reasons.
To play the game, one or more players are required to place forced bets. These bets are known as blind bets and they take the form of either an ante or a blind bet (or both). The dealer then shuffles the cards, and each player is dealt 2 cards face down, which are called their hole cards. A round of betting begins, beginning with the player to the left of the big blind.
After the pre-flop betting phase, 3 additional cards are dealt to the center of the table and revealed to all players. This is called the flop and another round of betting begins. Once the final betting round has concluded, the players reveal their hands and the winner collects the pot.
