Poker is a card game played by two or more players. The game is a combination of chance and skill; over time, the application of skill can eliminate some of the luck in the game. Players make bets on their cards and may raise or re-raise after each round of betting, called the flop, the turn, and the river. The player with the best five-card hand wins the pot.

Players must pay a small and large blind to participate in each round of betting, unless they are the dealer. The player to the left of the button takes on the role of the dealer and acts last. The button moves clockwise after each hand.

The game begins with the dealer dealing each player a complete hand of five cards face down. Then three community cards are dealt: the flop, the turn, and the fifth and final card – the river. There are four rounds of betting: before the flop, after the flop, after the turn, and after the river.

In general, it is better to fold preflop if you don’t have a good starting hand. Playing 50%+ of your hands is a surefire way to get bled out by bet sizes from stronger hands. However, if you’re beat after the flop or the turn, you can check to see a free river card or keep your opponents guessing with a bluff.
